What services do SLT for Kids provide in pupil referral units?
Our dedicated speech and language therapists are able to provide speech and language therapy services tailored to the identified needs of the students in the pupil referral unit. Our speech and language therapy services at SLT for Kids can be delivered on different levels to meet different requirements and needs.
At SLT for Kids we believe that behaviour is communication, we understand that pupils who are unable to express themselves or understand complex instructions may behave in ways that are not typical in order to communicate. Many children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties often have undiagnosed communication and interaction difficulties. It is predicted that between 40% and 54% of children with behaviour difficulties have a language impairment.
Speech and language therapy in pupil referral units will most likely focus on the identification and investigation into the reason for particular behaviours. Therapy will be bespoke and different for each pupil depending on their needs.
Our therapists will take time to understand each pupil. We are also able to aid diagnosis of unidentified coexisting developmental disorders e.g. social, emotional and mental health, ADHD, ASD, attachment disorder and conduct disorder.
We will be able to intervene with the pupils language and help them to develop higher level understanding and expression skills and most of all support them in their readiness to learn.
What benefits can a speech and language therapy service provide to pupil referral units?
Our speech and language therapy service at SLT for Kids can provide many benefits to the staff and students in pupil referral units. The pupil referral unit will be assigned a speech and language therapist with time that they can dedicate solely to the pupils within the unit and their needs. They will be available to offer training, advice and therapy on any level needed. This can not only help improve individual students language and communication but can help support staff in identifying underlying language and communication needs.
Our speech and language therapy service can focus on identification and raising awareness of different unidentified speech, language and communication needs and how pupils may express these through different behaviours. We can also help support these needs and behaviours by training of the workforce. We are able to provide a focus on social, emotional and mental health health needs and how these may affect speech and language and offer training on the different ways children may express themselves in these situations. Not only will the school have a dedicated speech and language therapist, but alongside this there will be no waiting lists for therapy and advice.
What benefits can speech and language therapy delivered within pupil referral units bring to a pupil?
Our speech and language therapists at SLT for Kids are able to identify all children that may need support so that no child goes unidentified. Our speech and language therapists are fully trained in investigating underlying communication and interaction difficulties that may be causing specific challenging behaviours. All pupils in the unit can be supported by our speech and language therapists in terms of their speech, language and communication.
We can work on developing the skills of the pupils and developing their independence and readiness to learn. We will take time out with each pupil to get to know them individually and understand their social, emotional or mental health needs.
Training of the workforce within a pupil referral unit will allow any young people that are having difficulty in communicating to be understood and identified. Continuous support can be provided from staff with the help of a speech and language therapist, benefitting every young person.
