Q&A

What inspired you to become a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist?

I first came across Speech and Language Therapy whilst volunteering in a Special Educational Needs Nursery setting. This is where my interest in the importance of communication began, and I was amazed by the positive impact Speech and Language Therapy could have on children and their carers. After researching the profession further I was fascinated by the range of communication needs Speech and Language Therapists are able to support. Combined with my love for working children and their families, I knew that Speech and Language Therapy was the right career for me.

What additional training do you have?

I have Foundation level training in Makaton. This is a child-friendly signing system which is invaluable when supporting early language development.

I am also a trained Elklan Tutor and I am able to provide parents and teaching staff accredited training on identifying and supporting children with speech, language and communication difficulties.

I am also trained to deliver the Hanen – More Than Words training programme for parents of children ages 5 and under on the autism spectrum and with other social communication difficulties. Addressing the unique needs of these children, the program provides parents with the tools, strategies and support they need to help their children reach their full communication potential. This training can be delivered in a group or with individual families.

Is there a speech, language, communication or swallowing condition you enjoy working with the most?

I particularly enjoy working with young pre-school children with significantly delayed speech, language and communication development. I am passionate about providing early identification and intervention to reduce the impact their difficulties will have in the future. It is incredibly rewarding when children make rapid progress and catch up with their peers.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy attending and teaching dance lessons. I have enjoyed learning a range of dance styles since I was a little girl, and I look forward to participating in a charity dance show every year to raise money for Child Line.

What is your favourite thing about being a speech and language therapist with SLT for Kids?

SLT for Kids supports me in taking a holistic, flexible, multi-disciplinary approach to assessment and intervention - I believe this is key when providing a child-centred, effective service. I have access to high quality resources and training which enables me to offer a range of interventions for children and their families.
